Why Adapt?

If society substantially reduces its emissions of greenhouse gases (mitigation) over the coming decades, the climate system is projected to continue to change over the forthcoming centuries. Therefore, adaptation is necessary.

Society has to prepare for and adapt to the consequences of some inevitable climate change effects. Mitigation measures alone are not sufficient. For the most vulnerable deltas of the world, adaptation strategies are necessary to deal with the climate change effects.

As the IPCC suggested in his report: ‘Adaptation will be necessary to address impacts resulting form the warming which is already unavoidable due to past emissions.’ But more importantly: ‘A wide array of adaptation options is available, but more extensive adaptation than is currently occurring is required top reduce vulnerability to future climate change.’
